Covr Employee App

Covr is a labor management tool built for the long term care nursing industry.

The employee app is used by employee users in Covr to manage their schedules. It was released in 2020 and has had minimal updates which has led to some severe technical and ux debt. Covr's stake holders needed the app to be reliable, flexible, and user friendly.

Due to technical constraints this project could only be released on mobile we were unable to release a web version.

GOAL

Create an easy to use experience that helps employees manage their schedule. Allow users to make edits to their personal information.

MY ROLE

I assumed all research and design responsibilities. I coordinated on writing the acceptance criteria with our BA Svitlana.

DURATION

1 Month

Discovery

In order to get a clear understanding of the major issues, I met with users, talked with the customer support team and read support tickets. I created some personas to help me stay focused. Here are some of the high impact issues we found.

Confusing Information Hierarchy

Managing settings and quickly looking at your schedule was confusing to some users

Cluttered With Deprecated Features

There are inactive or inaccurate features still visible to users

Feels Like A Different Brand

Since joining Covr I established a design system for all new products and the mobile app did not conform.

Poor Visibility Of System Status

When taking actions like picking up an open shift or trading there is no feedback to help the user understand what's happening

Design

During the design process I experimented with a couple of different directions and worked internally to refine the experience. Here are a few examples of some of the work that was done during this stage.

Testing

We met with some users and chatted internally as well to see if we could find ways to improve the current designs before moving forward.

Users Appreciated The Simple Design

We had several user remark that they preferred the simplification of the app

Users Wanted To See Past Shifts

Several users seemed puzzled that they could not scroll up to see past shifts. Due to the scope of some technical constraints we couldn't include this feature but we added it as a high priority ticket post release.

Shift Status Confusion

Initially if an open shift was requested you could only see it's status on the shift details. We had a few users confused about this so we added tags to the schedule view for better visibility of system status

Solution

After testing we refined our designs and began to prepare for handoff. Here are a few highlights.

New App Layout

When users enter the app they are immediately confronted with their schedule. This layout removes the uncessary need for the user to first interact with a menu and then view their schedule.

Feedback For Core Actions

Before there was no visual feedback when performing tasks like picking up an open shift or trading shift

Page Dedicated To Managing Requests

Now there is a dedicated spot for employee users to review and manage their requests. We wanted to include time off requests but due to the scope we had to remove it from the MVP.

Ability To Manage Settings

Now users had a more comprehensive way to manage their Covr profile information

Outro

We were able to implement and launch the new employee app.  This MVP represents a great base to build off of and improve. I'm excited to see all the ways this app will grow. None of this would have been possible without Covr's great product development team. Shout out to Andrew Telkamp who literally built the whole thing.
